Return to BLOG here.

It is shocking that neither U.S. Senators from New York (Hillary Clinton and Charles Schumer, both Democrats) have announced support for this bill. Their leadership could have brought many more on board in the Senate and their persistent silence is an immoral abdication of responsibility. Tens of thousands of same-sex binational couples in New York live in fear of deportation, and are excluded from family unity provisions of our immigration law even when they are legally married in Massachusetts, Canada or elsewhere. Clinton and Schumer tend to dive for cover cynically when it comes to the interests of gay and lesbian New Yorkers they proport to represent. In the case of Hillary Clinton, who supports anti-gay discrimination in this country's marriage laws, her hypocrisy is galling. She raises money and is feted by gay and lesbian donors but turns a deaf ear to the most vulnerable of her constituents. Clinton and Schumer should immediately follow the example of their colleagues from Oregon and Connecticut and announce their support for the UAFA.
