In fact it is well known that millions who entered legally go on to violate the terms of their visas or exceed the period of authorized stay. Despite the White House's publicized signing of the (unfunded) Border Fence bill, despite their campaign sloganeering, and despite the appeal to xenophobia in certain border districts, the fact remains that government enforcement of all immigration laws and provision of benefits and services to the 35 million non-citizens in the U.S. must be vastly improved if we are to make ourselves more secure.
