I want to trap every anti-stem cell research candidate in their nonsensical "cloning" and "destruction of human life" arguments. I can barely bring myself to dignify these lies about cloning by referring to them as arguments. Another straw man argument used to demonize Fox, is the charge that he is promoting "false hope" when he is doing nothing of the kind. He makes an excellent counter argument that this country is based on hope, and scientific innovation.
Like same-sex marriage rights don't bring down civilization (Canada, Belgium, The Netherlands, Massachussets are all still intact), stem cell research is a no-brainer. The left should mobilize behind this issue, as a "values" issue, and as a moral issue. Legislators who stand in its way are potentially signing death warrants for those who may in the future benefit from cures or treatments for conditions like Parkinson's. The bill for the shameful Iraq war will soon come to a half-a-billion dollars. Surely we can fund embryonic stem cell research.
Stem cell research is also an emerging area of global science which will be fiercely competitive, and those who harness us to their theological or ideological extremism will simply be opening the door for our adversaries who will be more than happy to leave us in the dust.
