The laws of this country are abysmal when it comes to our communities; they fail miserably to reflect the full humanity of gay and lesbian people, leaving us not only unequal, but often untouchable in mainstream politics. We cannot let that stand. If gay marriage is not won in state legislatures, courts or Congress it means only that perseverence is required. With the diligent effort of individuals coming forward and speaking out against our unequal status, with non-gay allies such as those who stood up for us in Conservative Judaism, we will keep moving in the right direction. Each one of us executes an important political act with enormous social consequences when we live our lives without concealing our identity. At workplaces, churches and synagogues, around the family table at holidays. When we come out, live openly and proudly, and stand up for ourselves without compromise we effect change. The world will be a better place for our children and grandchildren if we do not surrender to despair. We cannot settle for being less than equal. Look what was achieve by the Conservative Jewish Movement today in a single vote. Astonishing.
