Why does this man, a lover of democracy, give us intentinally misleading indications before the election ("stay the course" and "Rumsfeld will stay on until the end of my term in office") and then head for the hills once the election is over? Let's see...in a vain attempt to prevent a Democratic landslide in the midterm elections? (obvious, and failed) To yank the war as an issue with which Democrats can beat up the Republican nominee heading into the Presidential race in 2008? (long-shot, Hail Mary pass) To preserve his legacy (laughable)? Because he could care less about democracy, but is consumed with winning election and preserving power (plausible). What Bush is cutting and retreating from is not Iraq, it is the American people.
