(Look at this scary development in Tennessee: Sheriff being given access to CIS database?)To call the agency "Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services" [emphasis added] is practically artifice. Before we dump the failed enforcement of immigration on state troopers (as Romney tried to do) and beat cops, we must pass a comprehensive immigration reform program that includes legalization for all undocumented aliens currently present in the U.S. But such reform would be useless without an overhaul of the culpable agencies, and realistic funding to give those bureaucracies a fighting chance at providing services as they are required to do by law. We have flushed $350 billion dollars down the toilet in the name of national security, while ignoring the very real problem that there are an estimated 10-20 million people in the United States who are forced to live on the margins of society, for exploitative wages, unable to participate fully despite paying taxes, and who live without proper identity documents. This is a problem that we can fix if we have the will. The time is now, because further delay only continues the immoral legacy of ill-treating the newcomers to our land. How we treat these men, women and children reveals much about our own character and our perception of it.
HERNDON, Va. — Herndon, Va., police officers could soon get the training needed to help them enforce federal immigration laws. Police Chief Toussaint Summers said Wednesday the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement has approved his request to work out an agreement that will allow his officers to exercise some federal authority. A written agreement between the federal agency and local officials will be worked out after the town council holds a public hearing on the proposal Summers said once that's approved, two senior special agents from ICE will be assigned to work with Herndon police on immigration law enforcement. Summers has been expressing interest in working with federal authorities on the immigration issue for months. He send a letter offering his department's help to federal officials last September. Last year, the mayor and all but one of the six-person Herndon City Council were voted out of office for their support of a taxpayer-funded day laborer site for illegals.
Notice below that the program in Tennesse targets enforcement on those arrested for committing crimes, who are of course not CONVICTED of anything. It doesn't take too much imagination to see who they will "arrest" first.
The first of thousands of immigration checks conducted automatically on every foreign-born person arrested in Nashville could be only weeks away, Davidson County Sheriff Daron Hall said Wednesday in announcing the approval of his application to partner with the federal government to enforce the countryƂ’s immigration laws locally. That also means that once the program -- known as the Delegation of Authority Program, or 287 (g) -– is fully in place, the first of thousands of suspected illegal immigrants who commit crimes in Nashville could quickly be ordered to prove their legal status, detained until taken to the federal immigration court in Memphis, or deported.
