But she misses the point, though not entirely. Newsom was a phenomenon, a political star who had taken on an unpopular causes, with unwavering determination. Universal health care and the environment, he was there with fresh new ideas. He was a hero to so many because he stood up for the right of couples to marry. Even Barney Frank denounced him as politically naive. Then, with all those accolades under his belt, he proceeded to violate his own campaign manager's marriage, and his own, in a way that he knew would compromise him, with disastrous consquences for his career, and the causees in which he so passionately believed. The hopes and dreams of millions, residents of San Francisco, and particularly pro-marriage equality Americans across the country, rested on his shoulders. This is a tremendous disappointment.
