New Hampshire not only hosts the first primaries in the Presidential campaign season, it is also host to two televised debates next week (one Republican, one Democrat). The debates will offer an excellent opportunity to force fence-sitters in both camps to reckon with the fact that states, left to their own devices, do indeed pass laws giving equal rights to same-sex couples. The canard of the activist judiciary, Bush-Romney's favorite enemy, won't help any candidate this time. So what say you, Democratic defenders of DOMA and Republican gay-bashers? Congressional leaders and Presidential candidates should be calling for the repeal of the so-called "Defense of Marriage Act" (now 11 years old!) and bring an end the institutionalized discrimination against gay and lesbian couples in all states and under federal law. The candidate that articulates that position will get my vote.
