(Just for entertainment value, I hope Lou Dobbs gets all worked up and explains why we should not to do this.) Does anyone remember the recent comprehensive immigration reform debacle? The U.S. currently issues less than 1 million green cards annually for all family and employment based categories. (Would these Iraqis get on a line that for some categories is backlogged more than 20 years?) Those 1 million green cards include self-petitioning aliens of extraordinary ability and asylees/refugees. I believe we should do this, but in this process we must look closely at how our present allocation of green cards and molasses slow bureaucracy. How can we provide for the future of 110,000 Iraqis who we have placed in harm's way because of their association with us? Unlike the fall of Saigon, we are unlikely to see a helicopter leaving from the roof of the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad weighed down with human cargo. Inevitably, the U.S. will pull out and leave almost all these Iraqis behind to fend for themselves. It is unconscionable, and you know the situation must be grave if Ambassador Croker is begging.
