One thing I'll say for the guy: unlike many politicians who tell people what they want to hear in the hope they will win office, he is going down fighting, but sticking to his guns. By contrast, can you imagine Hillary Clinton going down fighting for gay marriage? For McCain winning is not more important than sticking to his position on Iraq. I don't agree with it but I admire him for sticking to his position, despite its widespread disfavor. McCain is back in New Hampshire, humbled by his tiny budget and his campaign's early profligate spending, and hoping for a miracle.
