Polls are showing that the Republicans are looking at likely loss of control of the House. Apparently, the powers that be have figured out (doh!) that immigration policy does not help elect Republicans. Bashing immigrants in the name of "national security" as Republicans have been doing with their cynical and phony "town hall meetings" on immigration policy may have rallied the base but have not built a consensus. So wait until 2007 for another go at immigration reform, now 20 years overdue. There are 19 days left to this session before the election, so plan on hearing a lot about national security and very little about comprehensive immigration reform. Congress will not get an easy pass on this abdication of responsibility; protest marchers will begin this week around the country in an attempt to keep the pressure on. Unfortunately, the political calculus seems to suppor the Republicans' do-nothing strategy. Even conservative commentators have called this a "failure of leadership."
