Walmart has thrown us into the gutter rather than stare down the American Family Asociation, a hypocritically-named homophobic hate group that obviously has no compassion or empathy for gay and lesbian families. Most pathetic line in the sad story (Associated Press) is here. The company's spokesperson practically sounds like she squirming to avoid directly lying, but there is no doubt in my mind, they must think we are stupid. They caved, plain and simple:
The company's statement, she said, resulted primarily from concerns expressed by customers and employees, not from the boycott threat. There was no immediate word from a second conservative group, Operation Save America, on whether it was reconsidering its plans for prayer-and-preaching rallies outside many Wal-Mart stores on Friday.
The sad story is here. I guess if the crazies can't win elections, they can try to ruin American businesses with boycotts. Walmart was definitely out there as a gay supportive company, so I guess that made them a target. (Speaking of Target... are they next?)
Any doubt that what I am saying is true and extremely serious? Look at how this hate group spins their victory (note specifically their use of the vocabulary of war to describe their crusade against gay and lesbian Americans):
In response to Wal-Mart's statement, AFA has decided to cancel its efforts of encouraging people to not shop at Wal-Mart or Sam's Club this Friday and Saturday. We believe that Wal-Mart will remain neutral in cultural battles. [emphasis added]
Happy Thanksgiving to all my American friends. Don't shop at Walmart, and don't fill up at ExxonMobil owned stations on your way to celebrate this family holiday.
