Maybe this will help voters understand that there is a cost to our anti-immigration non-policy. Chertoff, I'd like you to please explain to American families struggling to get buy why they can no longer afford to buy meat products for their families. You are obviously the expert: though you have exercised discretion POORLY, rather than ensurin a safe and orderly immigration system, we have a televised, dog-and-pony-show, complete with made-for-tv press conferences, i.e. a waste of precious law enforcement resources (terrorists at the meat packing plant or courageous laborers, our contemporary Ellis Island arrivals?). Go ahead, Secretary Chertoff, please explain why you are not using your expertise to champion for reform, but instead going after hard working low wage employees who literally put the food on our collective table. And please don't tell me that it's Congress's responsibility. I won't you let you, grandson of immigrants from Russia, pass the buck. You should be giving a speech about discrimination in our current hopelessly broken immigration system and explaining to the American people and the legislators why the laws as they stand DO NOT WORK. Are you even aware of the suffering (for example) of gay and lesbian Americans who cannot sponsor their foreign partners? of parents and children separated for as long as a decade while they wait in an immigration queue? of long-time, law abiding, tax paying, Lawful Permanent Residents who suddenly find themselves deported for a minor offence that occured decades before, becuase Congress passed an inherently unjust, retroactive law making their crimes deportable? Are you aware of how many such heads-of-households were deported until the Supreme Court finally pointed out that this was patently unconsitutional? Why are we paying your salary?
